What to Expect During Your First Week of PHP at Spark Wellness

Starting a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) can feel overwhelming. You might be asking yourself:

  • What will my schedule look like?
  • Who will I be talking to?
  • Will I have to share everything right away?
  • What if I don’t fit in?

First, take a deep breath: these are normal questions. At Spark Wellness, we understand how intimidating it can be to begin something new—especially something as personal as mental health or addiction treatment.

That’s why your first week in PHP is designed to feel supportive, not stressful.

What Is PHP, Exactly?

PHP stands for Partial Hospitalization Program—but don’t let the name scare you. There’s no hospital gown or overnight stay. You come to our center (or join virtually), participate in a structured day of therapy, then return home in the afternoon or evening.

PHP is ideal for individuals who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy but don’t require 24/7 residential care.

Your First Day: Orientation & Introductions

Your first day is all about getting settled. You’ll:

  • Meet with our clinical team for a personalized intake
  • Review your treatment plan and daily schedule
  • Tour the space (if attending in person)
  • Get introduced to group facilitators and peers
  • Have time to ask questions and ease into the process

You won’t be expected to share your life story on day one. Many clients simply observe their first group or speak up only when they’re ready.

What Your Weekly Schedule Will Look Like

Most clients attend PHP 5 days a week, typically for 5–6 hours per day. Each day includes a mix of:

  • Group therapy sessions on topics like emotional regulation, relapse prevention, trauma, relationships, and boundaries
  • Individual therapy with your assigned clinician (usually 1–2x per week)
  • Medication management if needed (with our psychiatric provider)
  • Expressive therapies like art, music, journaling, or movement
  • Psychoeducation—tools for understanding your symptoms and building healthier habits

You’ll also receive breaks throughout the day and time for reflection, meals, or stepping outside.

The People You'll Meet

The Spark Wellness PHP team includes:

  • Licensed therapists (LPCs, LCSWs, etc.)
  • Psychiatric nurse practitioners
  • Certified addiction professionals
  • Peer recovery specialists
  • Case managers (if you need help coordinating outside services)

And of course—other clients just like you. Some will be further along in their healing journey, while others are just starting too.

Many clients form deep connections here that last long after treatment ends.

Common Feelings During Week One

You might feel nervous, hopeful, uncomfortable, or even skeptical in your first few days. That’s okay. It takes time to adjust—but most clients report feeling relief by the end of week one.

Why? Because they realize they’re not alone—and they finally have a plan.

We’ll Meet You Where You Are

Whether you're coming to us from a hospital stay, residential program, or your own decision to seek help, we’ll tailor PHP to your unique situation and goals.

You don’t need to be “ready” in any perfect way. You just need to show up.
